Wednesday, 14 October 2026

Tennis Wales has secured significant funding from the Welsh Government to support the Lexus Wrexham Open in 2026 and 2027, reinforcing a shared commitment to growing professional women's sport and showcasing Wales on the world stage.

The investment will support the continued development of the Lexus Wrexham Open, which takes place annually at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, delivered by Mosaic Group with funding from the LTA and support from Tennis Wales.

As one of just 33 cities worldwide to host a World Tennis W100 tournament, the 2026 Lexus Wrexham Open will be taking place from Sunday 18th to Sunday 25th October. The tournament has quickly established itself as the leading international tennis event in Wales and attracts professional players from across the world to compete in Wrexham, providing valuable opportunities for Welsh players to compete alongside international talent while inspiring the next generation of athletes.

Alongside the professional tournament, the Mini Wrexham Open gives young tennis players from across North Wales a chance to play on the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre's show courts, surrounded by stadium seating, ahead of the Lexus Wrexham Open's semi-final matches.

The funding provided by the Welsh Government recognises the important role that major sporting events play in generating economic impact and raising the profile of Wales as a destination for sport. The Lexus Wrexham Open welcomes players, coaches, officials and spectators from across the UK and internationally, delivering benefits to the wider regional economy.

Since its inception last year, the Lexus Wrexham Open has become a key fixture on the international women's tennis calendar. Hosting an event of this scale in North Wales demonstrates the region's ability to deliver major sporting events and provides a platform to celebrate the area's culture and sporting facilities.

Simon Johnson, Chief Executive of Tennis Wales, said: "We are delighted to have secured Welsh Government investment to support the Lexus Wrexham Open in 2026 and 2027. This funding is a major vote of confidence in the event, in Wrexham as a host city, and in the wider role that sport can play in driving economic growth and tourism across North Wales."

"The Lexus Wrexham Open has become an important international competition that brings together talented players from across the world while creating opportunities for Welsh players, volunteers and communities. We look forward to building on the event's success over the next two years and welcoming even more visitors to the region for what promises to be another outstanding week of international women's tennis."

Culture and Sport Minister Heledd Fychan, said: “Supporting the Lexus Wrexham Open and women's tennis is important. Not only will this event deliver economic benefits but, just as importantly, it will give an opportunity for young girls to see tennis of this standard on their doorstep. I'm keen to inspire the next generation to get involved, and to aim high if they want to.

“Sport is for all, and even if not everyone reaches an international level like the players in Wrexham, developing a love for sport and physical activity will have a positive impact on their mental and physical health for years to come.”

The investment reflects the Welsh Government and Tennis Wales's shared ambition to grow women's sport in Wales and strengthen Wales's international sporting profile. By continuing to develop the Lexus Wrexham Open, Tennis Wales and its partners will help ensure that North Wales remains a destination for world-class tennis while creating lasting benefits for the region.
