Two of the stars of Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup team, Sonay Kartal and Jodie Burrage, have entered this month’s Lexus Wrexham Open as world class tennis comes to North Wales. They both feature on the initial acceptance list for the prestigious W100 event, which will take place on the indoor courts at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre between October 19-26. The Lexus Wrexham Open - the biggest women's tennis tournament, outside of the grass court season, to be played in the UK this year - has replaced the Lexus W100 Shrewsbury, won last year by Kartal, in the LTA Performance Competitions Calendar for 2025.
Kartal and Burrage head a list of British entries which also includes Amarni Banks, Lily Miyazaki and Welsh teenager Mimi Xu, all currently ranked in the British top 10. A strong international entry list features promising French star Tiantsoa Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah, the recent winner of the Sao Paulo Open, a WTA 250 tournament, with her success in Brazil lifting her to a career high ranking of 127. Jessika Ponchet, from France, reached the last 32 of the US Open last year, while the entry list also includes Clervie Ngounoue and Czech player Nikola Bartunkova, who met in the 2023 girls’ singles final at Wimbledon, a match won by promising American Ngounoue.
Dave Courteen, tournament promoter for the Lexus Wrexham Open, said: “It’s a really strong field with lots of up and coming players, rising stars of the future, as well as players who have already enjoyed notable success in their careers. It’s always exciting to look at the initial acceptance list when it’s revealed and to see the quality of the players that have entered the tournament, but we are always mindful that a lot can happen between now and October 19 in terms of the final line up.
“It’s great to see so many of the current British top 10 players on the entry list. Sonay Kartal, as it stands, is scheduled to be the number one seed and she has done fantastically well since winning the W100 Shrewsbury title last October. She has since progressed to the fourth round at Wimbledon, broke into the world’s top 50 for the first time and has just reached the quarter-finals of the China Open, a major WTA tournament.
“Jodie Burrage was in the Great Britain team alongside Sonay for the Billie Jean King Cup finals in China recently and has been ranked as high as 85 in the world. There’s lots to look forward, tickets are selling well, and excitement is really starting to build the closer we get to the start of the tournament.”
Ticket prices, which include a 44-page tournament programme, start from £7.50 for adults and £3.50 for under-16s, with finals day tickets to enjoy both the singles and doubles finals costing £22.50 and £17.50 respectively.
Tennis fans can also buy a tournament pass to watch all matches throughout the week, priced £67.50 for adults and £47.50 for under-16s.
