From beating the world number one to being top seed at Wrexham

A rising tennis star who has just beaten the world's number one player is set to be the top seed at this month's Lexus Wrexham Open.

Armenia's Alina Charaeva hit the headlines by beating newly-crowned world number one Elena Rybakina at the China Open last weekend before then getting the better of British player Sonay Kartal in the last 32.

Charaeva, who has broken into the top 100 in the world as a result of her exploits in China, is one of a number of players in the world's top 150 to feature on the initial acceptance list for the World Tennis Tour W100 event to be played on the indoor courts at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre between October 18-25.

The Wrexham tournament is the biggest women's event outside of the grass-court season in the UK this year, with tickets selling well.

The tournament has attracted a high-quality international entry list, with Robin Montgomery, Lucrezia Stefanini, Dominika Salkova and Rebecca Sramkova, listing Wrexham as their number one priority on the acceptance list.

Serbian Teodora Kostovic, 19, who faced Aryna Sabalenka on Centre Court when she made her Grand Slam main draw debut this summer, has also entered.

Dave Courteen, the Lexus Wrexham Open promoter, said: "We are delighted with the quality of the entry list for this month's tournament as we look forward to the return of world-class women's tennis to North Wales.

"We are always mindful that a lot can happen between now and the start of the tournament, but it's fantastic that so many top players have listed Wrexham as their number one priority on the initial acceptance list.

"It's a much stronger entry list than last year with players from around the world heading to Wrexham to play.

"Alina Charaeva is in great form, as illustrated by beating Elena Rybakina over the weekend, so that's a great story for the tournament, a player going from getting the better of the world's top player to playing in Wrexham within a couple of weeks.

"To have so many leading players from the world's top 150 is exciting, particularly so many up and coming rising stars, so for spectators it really is a case of having the opportunity of watching players with the talent to potentially go on to become future Grand Slam champions."

A host of leading British players, including Billie Jean King Cup star Jodie Burrage, Alicia Dudeney and Hannah Klugman are also on the initial entry list.

Ticket prices, which include a 44-page tournament programme, start from £8 for adults and £4 for under-16s, with finals day tickets to enjoy both the singles and doubles finals costing £25 and £19 respectively.
