Sports Journalism Multimedia Competition

For all Wrexham learners (Years 5-8)
Learners in Years 5 to 8 across Wrexham are invited to take part in an exciting multimedia competition celebrating the Lexus Wrexham Tennis Open 2026.

Working individually or in teams of up to three, pupils will take on the roles of sports journalists, commentators and production crew to create an engaging, multi-media 'live' commentary recording for the final game from the 2025 Wrexham Open tennis final, which saw rising Welsh star Mimi Xu clinch the title.

What entrants will do

Participants will be expected to:

  • Research and understand tennis rules and scoring systems
  • Script, rehearse and deliver a realistic 'live' sports commentary
  • Use digital equipment and platforms available in school to record, edit and produce a polished multimedia commentary
  • Create a final piece lasting 5 minutes, designed to be watched or listened to as if covering a real sporting event

Prizes

  • 1 Welsh medium entry and 1 English medium entry will each win £50
  • Shortlisted finalists will be invited to a presentation ceremony during the Lexus Wrexham Open week and will have two tickets each to watch the world tour tennis in Wrexham
  • Judging will be carried out by a panel of local and national media professionals led by Catherine Whitaker, award winning presenter of The Tennis Podcast and tennis commentator for Prime Video and Eurosport
  • The shortlist finalists will be announced at end of summer term and the winners will be announced on at the presentation ceremony in October
  • The winning schools will also each receive £500
